Ripon Cathedral to host Yorkshire Girls’ Choirs’ Festival

Ripon Cathedral is hosting this year’s annual Yorkshire Girls’ Choirs’ Festival.

Taking place on Saturday 8th March, it will see the choirs of Ripon, Bradford, Sheffield and Wakefield Cathedrals and York and Leeds Minsters joining together to sing Choral Evensong at 5.30pm.

The service, combining music with the beautiful language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, will include Howells’ setting of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in G and Parry’s celebrated anthem, Hear my words, ye people. Ripon Cathedral’s Director of Music, Andrew Bryden, will direct the choirs who will be accompanied by Assistant Organist, Ben Horden, at the organ.

Mr Bryden said: “The nature of our work means that cathedral choirs rarely combine forces, so this is a fantastic opportunity not only for the girls to meet and sing with other choristers, but also for us to hear the splendid sound of six excellent choirs singing as one. The event also celebrates the great contribution that girl choristers make to music both here at Ripon Cathedral and across Yorkshire.”

The Cathedral’s lunchtime recitals continue on Thursday 6th March with music students from Leeds University and Thursday 13th March musicians from Queen Mary’s School.
