Friends join in Christmas Food & Gift Fair

Christmas FairIn what we hope will become a regular event, members of the Friends volunteered to help at the door for this year’s Christmas Gift and Food Fair held on 24th November.

The Fair is held every year by the Ripon Cathedral Development Campaign (RCDC).

This year the Fair was especially successful, with an extension in the Old Deanery, more space for visitors and a wide range of festive entertainment.

Margaret Hammond of RCDC sent the letter below to all volunteers.

Thank you So Much

Thank you for your kind contribution towards this year’s successful Christmas Gift and Food Fair.

The event could not take place without your generosity and that of so many people in the local community. There are so many people to thank, from the 21 Engineer Regiment who set up on Friday and cleared away the Cathedral furniture on Saturday after the fair, the volunteer cake bakers, the volunteer helpers on the day, staff from Wolseley Ripon for setting up the Grotto and laying and making safe the electrics, to the Co-operative for providing the baking ingredients, Cocked Hat Farm Foods for providing Turkeys, Hemingway’s for providing Santa gifts, and many individuals who provided tombola and raffle items.

Also we would like to thank all the Cathedral staff, the musicians from the Cathedral Primary School and Boroughbridge High, the Decebelles Choir and the Cowthorpe Hand bell Ringers.

We are also grateful to the Friends of Ripon Cathedral for manning the entrance door, Tom Ramsden for putting up banners and signs, members of Children’s Church, and our two jolly Santas. Last but not least our stall holders who came from far and wide to support the Cathedral, some of them attending for the tenth year!

All together a great team effort, and with your help we raised £17,000 towards the essential stonework and glass repairs at the Cathedral.

The figures below show the amounts raised for each activity on the day.

This year’s Christmas Gift and Food Fair was “the best ever”, with the help of the Cathedral staff we created a completely new set up which not only looked good but also eased the visitor flow around the stalls and also around the busy cafe area. We also moved Santa’s Grotto which made queueing and pushchair access easier.

We were delighted that this year we had the addition of 15 new stalls at The Old Deanery Hotel which proved to be a great success. The stall holders and owners of the Old Deanery were all delighted with the footfall and atmosphere, and we hope that this will continue in future years. Many local Ripon traders also reported that takings were much higher than usual. Here are some comments we have received by email following the Fair from happy Stall Holders.

I had such a lovely day, with great sales, amazing comments from customers and a great, vibrant atmosphere. A lovely lady greeted me this morning and was so helpful by carrying some of my boxes. It was really well organised. Thank you again for the opportunity to have a stall – it was such boost to starting my business and in such an uplifting atmosphere.” LA

“I thought I would just drop you a quick line to say how much I enjoyed the Cathedral Fair last Saturday. As it was our first time there I was not quite sure what to expect, but the whole event was so well organised and the atmosphere was great. As I was doing the stall on my own the cups of tea brought round for stall holders was much appreciated, as was the help unloading my stock at 7 in the morning! The clearing away at the end was astonishing – if you want a job doing quickly and efficiently “bring in the army” I was impressed!” LR

We cannot thank you enough for your generous contribution and help for the Cathedral, and I hope that you will support us again in 2013 when the Christmas Fair will be held on Saturday 23rd November.

With best wishes
